Try to Keep Emotion Out of Your Sports Betting
Almost immediately after any major sporting event, the bookmakers can offer you future odds on whatever team or individual just won something. If it’s a football game, they will have a quote for you right away on the chances of that team winning a championship. If it’s a horse race, they will have the odds on that horse winning whatever the next big race is or the biggest race of the year.
The reason they do this is because they are trying to cash in on the emotions of the sports bettor. Perhaps the worst time to make a future bet is immediately after an event. If you just saw a golfer win a fairly minor tournament very impressively and had the immediate reaction that “he can’t be beaten in the Open,” you’re liable to take whatever odds the bookmaker is offering you at that moment.
It’s a much better idea to take a breath and think about it before you commit your money. Maybe there were other reasons that player looked so good. Maybe the field was weak or maybe the conditions were just perfect for him, conditions that he won’t get in the Open. And maybe the odds you’re getting aren’t as good as you should be getting.

Myths About Sports Betting
The notion, or maybe it’s the legend, of sports betting is that the linemaker has his books perfectly balanced and will win whichever way the event goes. In other words, if it’s a football match, he has 105,000 pounds bet on each team. Whichever team wins, the winners get back their 105,000 plus 100,000 profit. The bookmakers then collect the remaining 5,000 as their profit. Either way the game goes, the bookmaker will make money.
In reality, it rarely works that way. Rarely does the action come in that evenly. Usually, the bookmaker has to take a side, encouraging the action in one or the other direction. Often, the choice is made for him by the bettors. A betting line, be it a total or just odds, can be moved in one direction by the action that one side is getting. When that happens, the house tries to balance their action as best they can.
For major events, such as a cup final or other major events, there is much more than the simple win betting on the sports match. There are also long-term sports bets, whether they were made on the event long ago or just recently. It’s not unusual for a book to make a good deal of profit on the win betting for an event but to lose much of it back after they pay out the future bets.
